2023 AFCON-Q: Ghana Draw With Madagascar In A ‘Tricky’ Game

On Sunday, June 18, the Black Stars’ penultimate match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar ended in a goalless draw.

Despite controlling the game’s pace, the Black Stars of Ghana were unable to score on what appeared to be a dead attack in a game that many expected to be dominated by them.

In the opening stages of the game, the Black Stars received the majority of the ball but were unable to advance in the opposition’s box.

Kamaldeen Sulemana had Ghana’s first attempt at goal in the 18th minute, but his effort to curl the ball into the far post went just wide.

Chris Hughton’s men were given more chances as a result. After 24 minutes, a shot from outside the box by Joseph Paintsil went well over the crossbar.

Notwithstanding being given such countless set pieces in the first half of the game, Ghana did very little to raise a ruckus around town of the net.

There were no goals scored in the first half, and neither team was able to get a shot off target.

After the break, Thomas Partey’s well-taken free kick in the 55th minute came close, but the Madagascar goalkeeper saved it.

Mohammed Kudus appeared to be on the verge of something spectacular a few minutes after making his debut, but his effort also missed the target.

The first shot hit the mark in the 86th minute, with Madagascar recording both within a minute.

Lawrence Ati-Zigi saved the shot from Madagascar’s Ibrahim Amada before the St. Gallen goalkeeper saved the corner kick’s subsequent effort.

Osman Bukari and Partey made shots on goal for Ghana, but they were not enough to threaten the home team, and the game ended without a goal.

Following Angola’s 2-1 victory over CAR on Saturday, June 17, Ghana now holds the one-point lead at the top of Group E.

In September 2023, the Black Stars will play CAR in their final qualifying series game to try to qualify to the AFCON, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
