
On July 25, 2024, Hon. Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, attended the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee to discuss issues with conservation at the Forts and Castles World Heritage Properties.
The Deputy Minister praised UNESCO and its advisory bodies for helping Ghana effectively manage the Forts and Castles during his speech.
The Minister mentioned that the Forts and Castles conservation issue has become a national concern.
Without equivocation, Mr. Okraku-Mantey stated that the Ghanaian government has provided resources to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture to address the properties’ management and conservation issues.
The Minister stated that Ghana will collaborate with the World Heritage Centre and its Advisory Bodies to mobilize the international community to support the conservation of the Forts and Castles, referring to an earlier request made by the World Heritage Committee for Ghana to do so.

Mark Okraku-Mantey assured UNESCO of Ghana’s obligation to execute the World Heritage Convention and its Operational Guidelines.
The World Heritage Committee is an annual event that consists of representatives from the twenty-one (21) States Parties to the Convention elected by their General Assembly.
