The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that the government is making progress on the construction of 609 new homes specifically designed for public servants in the country.
Oppong Nkrumah stated that these new housing units are a part of the government’s larger efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit, which is currently estimated at 1.8 million units, at a press briefing in Accra on Monday (30 September 2024).
He went on to say,
“Our public servants benefit from decent housing. These homes are being built as part of the District Housing Programme, which aims to meet the housing needs of public sector workers like teachers, nurses, police officers, and other essential workers, especially those who are assigned to rural and underserved areas. It gives them dignity and lets them do their jobs well”.
“Our public servants deserve quality housing that fosters a conducive environment for their work and family life,” the minister said.
“The new homes will be constructed in various districts across the country, ensuring accessibility for those in rural areas.”
Oppong Nkrumah provided updates on ongoing efforts to resolve nationwide stalled housing projects in addition to the new homes.
He confirmed that the State Housing Company Limited has been given control of the Koforidua affordable housing project, which had been put on hold.
Oppong Nkrumah went on to say that the Saglemi Housing Project was originally supposed to deliver 5,000 units, but they ran into problems along the way.
The Minister confirmed that negotiations to transfer the project to a private developer are currently underway.

The minister also emphasized the partnership with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to secure long-term financing for housing projects.
“This approach will allow for the completion and sale of the units without further government investment.”
“The GIIF will play a pivotal role in developing innovative financing models that will support our efforts to address the housing deficit,” he stated.
