700th Club Goal For Lionel Messi, And Its… (Watch)

On Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain extended their lead in Ligue 1 to eight points thanks to a 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Marseille led by Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

PSG, who were without injured Neymar, moved up to 60 points from 25 games with 52 points from second-placed Marseille. Mbappe, who scored twice, was the one who set up Messi for both of his goals. He then repaid the favor by scoring another for the Argentine forward.

Between his trophy-laden time at Barcelona and his more recent time at PSG, Messi has scored 700 goals for clubs. Mbappe, the France forward who was on the losing team in the World Cup final against Messi’s Argentina, equaled Edinson Cavani’s 200 goals and became PSG’s joint record scorer.

PSG played the game with intensity and aggression. Igor Tudor, the coach of Marseille, stated that he did not regret his team’s high-risk strategy.

“Why should we have changed our way of playing? It has been working well this season,” he said. “Mbappe’s presence didn’t change anything. His presence made it more difficult for us to play our game, but we were not going to change it.”

Third-place Monaco lost 3-0 at home to Nice, who won thanks to a double from Terem Moffi and a fantastic half-volley from Khephren Thuram.

After the northerners’ 1-1 draw at Montpellier on Saturday, Monaco now has 50 points, which puts them ahead of Lens, who are in fourth place on goals scored.

PSG, who were eliminated from the French Cup by Marseille earlier this month, beat Lille last weekend to snap a three-game losing streak in all competitions and remained focused throughout at the Velodrome.

They suffered an early injury blow when Presnel Kimpembe left the field on a stretcher two weeks after returning from a three-month absence due to an Achilles problem. Kimpembe missed the World Cup for France.

When Messi played Mbappe through, he raced into the area and beat Pau Lopez with a low shot in the 25th minute. Matteo Guendouzi posed a threat as Marseille pressed hard and hard, but they were exposed on the counter.

The roles were reversed four minutes later when Mbappe sent a precise cross to Messi, who scored from close range to double the lead in front of a 65,800-capacity crowd, a Ligue 1 record.

After Messi missed a sitter, Mbappe was denied by Lopez after being found in the area once more by the Argentine, and Marquinhos’ angled shot went just wide as Marseille were caught on the break once more.

Mbappe volleyed the ball home with his left foot for his 16th goal of the season in Ligue 1. Messi had a beautiful lift of the ball into his path.

In the 67th minute, PSG kept a clean sheet for the first time in six league games thanks to a spectacular save by Gianluigi Donnarumma from a header by Nuno Tavares.

After losing the first match 1-0 at the Parc des Princes, PSG will play Nantes at home before traveling to Bayern Munich for the Champions League last-16 return match.
