Nana Akwasi Awuah, managing director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), has stated that it would be unfair to ban small scale mining in Ghana. He thinks a total ban on small scale mining is not the best option.
His remark is in response to stakeholders’ calls for a ban on small-scale mining due to the country’s pollution of numerous water bodies.
Mr. Awuah argues that other legitimate small-scale miners could lose their livelihood as a result of the ban.
He said the following in an interview with Asaase radio on September 27:
“We are equally concerned, but we feel strongly that the proposition for an outright ban is unfair and would not work because in the past it did not work and we don’t think that it’s going to work at this time.”
”So we need to think outside the box and that thinking outside of the box requires consensus building, which is what the ministerial committee is currently engaged in”
