A New Documentary By Megan Thee Stallion: The Anguish, Sufferings And More

It’s been two years since a jury found rapper Tory Lanez guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020 at a party in Los Angeles.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion decided to incorporate the episode into a new documentary. Stallion is now guiding the public through the chaotic years leading up to Lanez’s criminal trial in December 2022.

In “Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words,” the rapper spoke about her mother’s 2019 death from a brain tumor and the mental health issues that arose from the shooting in depth.

She also spoke about the betrayal of her childhood friend Kelsey Harris, who stood by Lanez after the shooting, her struggle for justice as Lanez and bloggers and gossip sites slammed her on social media, and many other topics in the documentary.

Critics “have ran my goddamn name through the ground so bad. And I think it’s because of how I am, and what I talk about and what I look like,” Megan, 29, says in the documentary, now on Prime Video.

“The betrayal, the constant torture online, everything that happened after the shooting definitely made it, like, a hundred times worse”, she added.

Since her criminal trial, Megan has not spoken extensively about the shooting or her mental health until the documentary.

Interviews and real-time video footage of Megan from her graduation from Texas Southern University in 2021 to her appearance at Lanez’s criminal trial fill the 112-minute film.

The fact that Megan is afraid of being targeted while performing is one of the revelations. In the years paving the way to the preliminary, Megan persevered through an attack online badgering from the people who supported Lanez against her and others.

She claimed that a variety of bloggers, podcasters, and social media accounts that persistently questioned Megan’s account of being shot influenced the critics.

Even earlier this week, Megan’s lawyers filed a lawsuit against YouTuber Milagro Gramz, claiming that Gramz was Lanez’s “mouthpiece” and “paid surrogate” during and after the high-profile criminal trial.

She talked about how she feared for her life in one of the scenes.

“Guys online say, ‘You should have gotten shot in the head. He should have finished the job. He should have killed your a– You’re always twerking, b—-, you deserved what you got,’” Megan recalled.

“I can’t separate trolling from real life,” she says. “Am I safe to perform in front of thousands of people? I don’t know who in this crowd.”

Stallion spent a month in a mental health facility, where she said she had her first suicidal thoughts and went through a downward spiral amid the media storm over the shooting.

She asserts, “I would rather not live through this than to have to live with it.”

Her mental pain was made even worse by the burglary of her house in 2022. While Megan was preparing to host “Saturday Night Live” in New York City, two men broke into her Los Angeles residence. Megan said that one night after the burglary, she had trouble breathing and called 911.

She stated,

“I thought I was about to die before I left to go to therapy,” she said. “It was like three days. I did not get out the bed and I never felt like this in my life,” she said, adding that she “stayed under covers and … cried every day.”

She eventually received one month of mental health care. She said that during that month, she went to multiple types of therapy and worked daily with a therapist to process the shooting.

Intimacy:

Megan talked about being afraid to tell the police about the shooting to protect her friends from police violence, the online criticism, and claims that she and Lanez had a sexual relationship in an April 2022 interview with CBS News.

She stated in the documentary that she had sex with Lanez “once, maybe twice, on a drunk night,” but she told the host King at the time that she and Lanez had not been intimate.

A video of the admission has gone viral on the internet, with some social media users condemning Megan and claiming that their sexual relationship does not negate the fact that she was shot.

Megan expressed dissatisfaction with the documentary’s focus on her sexual relationships.

“They have villainized me for being this type of person. It started to make me second-guess myself,” she said, referring to her overtly sexual lyrics and public image. She said sometimes she even found herself getting wrapped up in focusing on her sex life instead of the shooting. “I’m like, ‘Wait, this is not what this is about!’”

“The most important thing in the film was that, she was resilient, she’s triumphed, and she’s thriving right now,” says Nneka Onuorah, the documentary’s director.

After all these years, Megan has released a number of hit albums and toured arenas. However, she stated in the documentary that she continues to face criticism for speaking out about the shooting.
