A New Flying Taxi Made By South Korea To Be Launched In 2025

SK Telecom, the largest telecommunications company in South Korea, plans to launch a flying taxi service in 2025 and anticipates that it will continue to bring in more revenue.

A partnership to develop air taxis for the South Korean market was signed in 2022 by SK Telecom and the American company Joby Aviation. Electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles are produced by Joby Aviation. Advocates see these electric flying cars as a way to move people around dense cities without getting stuck in traffic.

By 2025, the South Korean government intends to make air taxis commercially available.

Joby Aviation and SK Telecom intend to make use of the government’s backing. SK Telecom’s chief development officer, Ha Min-yong, claims that the company’s air taxi service will be commercially available “sometime in the middle of 2025” before expanding into logistics.

He stated,

“So by 2025, if we are able to prove that the service quality is acceptable to the general public with the safety and also security, then they [the government] will allow the operator to expand the area of the service, including logistics and tourism as well as medical-related services”.

SK Telecom wants to go beyond being a traditional mobile carrier and focus on new industries like flying taxis and artificial intelligence. In order for these aircraft to operate and eventually fly on their own, they will need to connect to 5G networks of the next generation.

By 2050, nearly 160,000 unpiloted electrical drones will be in use worldwide, according to Roland Berger Consulting. This is despite the fact that this mode of transportation is still in its infancy. According to the company, they will bring in nearly $90 billion annually if it starts.

Ha stated,

“So for the next at least five [to] seven years, we need to make sure that the service that we are going to offer to, you know, society and community is safe enough. Once it’s accepted very well by the community and society, then we believe that it will generate a significant amount of revenue.”
