A New Law To Ban TikTok In The United States?

A proposal to ban TikTok in the United States “should be looked at”. According to US Senator Chuck Schumer, there have been concerns that China may use its laws to press TikTok. In addition, the Senate majority leader stated:

“We do know there’s Chinese ownership of the company that owns TikTok. And there are some people in the Commerce Committee that are looking into that right now. We’ll see where they come out.”

Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida, and Angus King, an independent from Maine, both stated that they had reintroduced new legislation with the intention of preventing TikTok from operating in the United States unless it severes ties to the company that it currently owns.

ByteDance, one of China’s most valuable private companies, owns TikTok. Having said that, a Democratic senator is calling on Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores.

TikTok Disappointed In Congress For Its Ban..

Officials in the United States have expressed concern that China might use its laws to force TikTok or ByteDance to hand over US user data that could be used for intelligence or disinformation.

The US government has banned TikTok from official devices as a result of these concerns, and more than half of US states have done the same.

TikTok has previously refuted the claims, saying that a US-based security team chooses who can access US user data from China and that it does not share information with the Chinese government.

According to a statement issued by a House committee, the Singaporean CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, is scheduled to testify before Congress in March on a variety of issues, including TikTok’s privacy and data security practices, the company’s impact on young users, and its “relationship to the Chinese Communist Party.”

The company has previously said that it welcomes “the opportunity to set the record straight about TikTok, ByteDance, and the commitments they are making.”

“We hope that by sharing details of our comprehensive plans with the full Committee, Congress can take a more deliberative approach to the issues at hand,” the TikTok spokesperson added.
