
Dr. Abiba Zakariah, a specialist in insurance, has been named by President John Dramani Mahama as the National Insurance Commission’s (NIC) acting commissioner.
After being appointed last week, Dr. Zakariah formally took office on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Michael Andoh, who has been acting since April 2023, will be replaced by her.
Dr. Zakariah has worked in the insurance sector for more than 20 years.
She was the Group Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation, a company owned by members of the West African Insurance Companies Association with a global presence, before becoming the founder and managing director of the management consulting firm Strategist Consortium.
She is a member of both the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana and the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) as a chartered insurer.
In addition to the aforementioned, Dr. Zakariah has an impressive academic background, which includes a PhD in Management Studies from the Swiss Management Center and a BSc (Hons.) and MBA from the University of Ghana.
At SIC Insurance (formerly State Insurance Corporation), where she started her career, Dr. Zakariah accumulated a wealth of industry experience.

She takes over this position as one of the most difficult tasks she will have to perform.
She is anticipated to accelerate this industry’s growth because market participants are putting more and more pressure on insurance companies to review their minimum capital requirements, a move that could require urgent attention from the new leadership.
