AFCON: Andre Ayew Makes Record For The Most Appearances Ever

Ghana Black Stars Skipper Andre Dede Ayew has again placed his name in the history books of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), showing up in the competition to tie the record for most appearances of all time.

During Ghana’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Mozambique in their final Group B match at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, Ayew reached this milestone. In spite of Ghana at last drawing the game with a 2-2 scoreline, Ayew’s record can’t be disregarded.

This appearance ties Ayew with Cameroon legend Rigobert Song for the most appearances in AFCON history. Song, a two-time AFCON champion with Cameroon (2000 and 2002), also played in the 2008 edition of the tournament where his team completed second to Egypt.

Ayew came on as a substitute in the second half against Mozambique, replacing Joseph Paintsil. While his notable second didn’t convert into a success for Ghana, it actually denotes a huge accomplishment in his famous lifetime.

Ayew turned out to be just the third player to take part in 8th edition of the competition when he came on as a substitute in Ghana’s 2-1 loss against Cape Verde.

Ayew has played a critical role in the Black Stars for several years now, when he entered the team as an extremely youthful player from the U-20 team that won the World Cup in 2009.
