In order to improve accountability and ensure that diplomatic passports are managed properly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 381 diplomatic passports have been returned in response to a presidential recall order.
All diplomatic and service passports issued during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had to be returned, according to the directive issued by Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama.
Officially, this recall ended on Friday, January 24, 2025.
The source claims that the majority of the recalled passports were turned in one day prior to the deadline, on Thursday, January 23.
By enabling official state representation overseas, the program is a component of the current administration’s efforts to guarantee that these specialized travel documents are used only for their intended purpose.
Holders of diplomatic passports enjoy benefits like accelerated customs clearance and exemptions from some taxes and duties in the host nation.

However, improper handling of these records could endanger both international relations and national security.
The recall came after it was revealed that some people who were no longer employed by the government still held diplomatic passports, which raised questions about possible abuse.
In order to stop future abuse of diplomatic passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated its intention to implement more stringent regulations.
