Ghanaian artist Akwaboah Jr. has expressed his displeasure with the gospel music community’s apparent hypocrisy. He drew attention to a discrepancy in the way churches and gospel Churches promote gospel music written by non-religious musicians.
While musicians like Kuami Eugene, Kwabena Kwabena, and others have gained considerable recognition for their gospel works, Akwaboah noted that his own work with the TY Crew gospel group has been mainly disregarded, presumably because of his secular upbringing. “Who truly decides who the pious ones are?” he said, challenging the standards by which artists are judged for their morality.
In a recent TikTok video, he expressed his displeasure and highlights the importance of diversity. The gospel music community was challenged by Akwaboah to acknowledge the creative contributions of non-religious performers. In an effort to close the divide between the secular and gospel music sectors, he revealed plans to record his own gospel songs.
