After several locations refused to host the service, Alexei Navalny’s spokesperson confirmed that a site for the funeral of the Russian opposition leader has been found.

Alexei Navalny’s spokesperson announced on Wednesday February 28 that the burial service for the Russian opposition leader will be held on Friday March 1, 2024 at a church in Moscow, fourteen days after he passed on in a far off Icy correctional colony.

Navalny’s body was handed over to his mom eight days after his demise, as per his spokesperson. The family went through difficulty finding an area able to hold the burial service, as many declined to host the service.

Writing on X, Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said that most venues said they were completely reserved, with some “refusing when we mention the surname ‘Navalny'” and one disclosing that “funeral agencies were forbidden to work with us”.

But, Yarmysh said on Wednesday that the memorial service has now been sorted out for Friday evening, and will be led at a church in Moscow’s southeast Maryino locale.

The opposition leader will be buried at a close by cemetery.

Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, said the memorial service was at first made arrangements for Thursday – the day of Putin’s annual address to Russia’s Federal Assembly – yet no venue would consent to hold it.

“The real reason is clear. The Kremlin understands that nobody will need Putin and his message on the day we say farewell to Alexei,” Zhdanov wrote on Telegram.

Russian authorities revealed recently that Navalny, seemingly the most unmistakable opposition leader in Russia, collapsed after a walk on February 16 in reformatory state number 3, quickly passing out. Authorities guarantee he was unable to be revived in spite of efforts to restore him.

Alexei Navalny’s Death Has Ignited Anger And Big Discussions From Global Leaders

He was 47 years of age at the hour of his demise, and he was serving a three-very long term prison sentence on charges many considered misleading and political.

The reason for his passing was at first demonstrated by Russian authorities as “unexpected death disorder” – something like a respiratory failure.

The results of any investigations into his death in Russia are likely to be challenged abroad, especially as Western leaders have widely condemned Russia’s President Vladimir Putin for the opposition leader’s death.
