Asantehene On The Need For Artists To Be Offered Opportunities As The Wests

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has stated that it is of the utmost importance for artists of African descent to be given the same opportunities as their counterparts from the West.

The King stated that this could be accomplished by providing them with opportunities on the global market and exhibiting their works in galleries and museums all over the world.

Otumfuo stated,

“African artists need to be appreciated. They have to be seen to be appreciated like all other artists, they can only be seen through museums and galleries. Opening the market to them and expanding the rate of opportunities to them should be part of the global conversation.”

Additionally, he advocated for development collaboration among museums.

“I will urge the continuous pursuit of collaboration with the museums and advanced cultural institutions, renewed attention to attention to training and the Creative Arts and a vigorous effort to expand market opportunities for works of African artists.”

“The quest for restitution should be no reason for closing the market to our artists. On the contrary, it should point to the satellite of the value of African arts to museums and collectors for legitimate acquisition.”

On Friday, July 19, 2024, His Majesty gave a speech as the guest speaker at the British Museum.
