Attacks On State Institutions: Ghanaians Appeal To The Police Department

Anonymous groups claiming to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of the ruling party in Ghana, have been attacking various state institutions, including private ones, for weeks following the inauguration of President John Mahama.

Concerns have been raised regarding the Ghana Police Service’s response to the recent attacks on state institutions in Ghana. Sometimes, in front of police officers who seemed unable or unwilling to step in, these purported supporters have stormed state institutions, locked offices, and caused major disruptions.

In order to preserve law and order, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has even called on President Mahama to take decisive action in response to these violent attacks.

In addition to calling for the police to take decisive action against violence following elections, political analyst Professor Asare has emphasized the need to depoliticize state institutions so that they serve the general public and are not used as instruments of partisan control.

However, public criticism and calls for reforms in the security sector to restore public trust have resulted from the perception of inaction or muted responses during some incidents.

President Mahama Not Happy With NDC Supporters Destroying State Properties

In actuality, every security agency has been silent, enabling almost ‘anybody’ in Ghana to act inappropriately while the public looks on. People expect the rule of law, which governs Ghana, to take charge of the current mess in the country.

Although the Ghana Police Service has taken action to keep the peace, questions remain regarding how they have handled attacks on state institutions, leading to demands for more forceful action and changes to guarantee fair and efficient law enforcement.

Is there something the citizens should know?
