
The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has applauded the Ghanaian media for its critical role in the country’s turn of events and his political campaign.
During an engagement with journalists on Sunday August 25 in Accra, Dr Bawumia said the significance of the media is a major partner in the country’s development.
He further guaranteed that a NPP-led government would maintain strong collaboration with the press.
The NPP flagbearer, who is additionally the Vice President of the nation repeated that, the NPP’s historical commitment to media freedom, noting that it was under former President Kufuor’s administration that the criminal libel law was repealed, allowing the media to operate freely.
“The NPP views the media as a crucial partner in national development. In our quest to expand the frontiers of democratic governance in Ghana, it was the NPP under former President JA Kufuor that repealed the criminal libel law for the media to function fully,” Dr Bawumia stated.
He further guaranteed that, if elected in the 2024 general elections, his administration would proceed to maintain and extend media freedom.
“We’re partners with you, and the partnership I will continue to keep as the new leader of the NPP. We’re committed to deepening media freedom,” he added.
