Bibiana Steinhaus-Webb has been named FIFA’s new head of women’s refereeing.
The German had a stellar career as a FIFA referee, including becoming the first woman to oversee a final at both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, as well as matches in the men’s Bundesliga.
Steinhaus-Webb received her qualification as a referee from the German Football Association in 1995. By trade, he was a police officer. She became a FIFA referee ten years later, and between 2008 and 2021, she officiated in nine FIFA competitions.
Steinhaus-Webb will, in collaboration with FIFA’s member associations and confederations, oversee and direct the advancement of women’s refereeing at all levels, including FIFA women’s competitions and educational initiatives.
Steinhaus-Webb commented on her appointment, saying:
“I’m thrilled to join FIFA and look forward to making a contribution to the steady growth of women’s refereeing. FIFA has shown a consistent commitment to taking refereeing to the next level as an integral part of the game, and it’s an honour for me to apply my experience and to support female referees across the world.”
FIFA remains committed to maximizing the enormous development potential of the women’s game and supporting its expansion.
Refereeing is a crucial component of that opportunity, and bringing in figures of Bibiana Steinhaus-Webb’s stature and experience will significantly contribute to this goal.
