Black Starlets of Ghana can some way or another hurl a sigh of relief in light of the fact that, the team might in any case get an opportunity to compete in the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) regardless of not reaching at the final of the WAFU-B competition.
The Ghana U17 team made a strong start to the WAFU championship by defeating Benin 2-0 and Ivory Coast 5-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
However, their hopes were dashed when Burkina Faso defeated them 2-1. Following a 3-2 defeat in the third-place playoff, they finished fourth.
At first, only two slots were available for West Africa under the qualification rules; however, recent developments indicate that there may be an expansion to Ghana’s advantage.
Ghana Are The Champions Of This Year’s UEFA Tournament
At their upcoming meeting on June 21, 2024, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is anticipated to discuss increasing the number of teams participating in the U17 AFCON.
The news is that, CAF is probably going to double the quantity of participating teams from 12 to 24, which would empower Ghana to get programmed qualification to the tournament. This development lines up with FIFA’s decision to build the number of teams in the World Cup to 48, granting Africa 10 spots in the global event.
The potential increase in team slots provides a lifeline for Ghana and possibly Nigeria, allowing both nations to compete in the AFCON and vie for a place in the next World Cup.
