BMW Releases Its Latest Hydrogen Cars

A pilot fleet of hydrogen vehicles was launched by the BMW Group on March 13, and the CEO of the German automaker referred to hydrogen as “the missing piece in the jigsaw when it comes to emission-free mobility.”

A facility in Munich is making the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which has a top speed of more than 112 miles per hour and uses fuel cells from Toyota.

The car has two tanks that hold hydrogen and can be filled in three to four minutes. BMW says it has a scope of 313 miles in the Overall Fit Light Vehicle Test System, or WLTP cycle.

Although the scale of the rollout is small, it will enter service in 2023, and a fleet of “under 100 vehicles” will be used “internationally for demonstration and trial purposes for various target groups.”

“A versatile energy source that has a key role to play in the energy transition process and therefore in climate protection,” said BMW Chair Oliver Zipse in a statement.

“One innovation on its own won’t be sufficient to empower environment impartial versatility around the world.” Zipse said.

The International Energy Agency describes hydrogen as a “versatile energy carrier” because it can be used in a variety of industries and transportation modes.

The potential of hydrogen is still being investigated by a number of automotive companies, including BMW. Toyota and Hyundai are among the others, and smaller businesses like Riversimple are also working on hydrogen-powered automobiles.

Hydrogen may have backers, but prominent automotive industry figures aren’t so sure.

Interestingly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted in June 2020,

“fuel cells = fool sells,” and in July of that same year, he added, ” Hydrogen sales made by fools make no sense.

Musk reaffirmed his skepticism regarding hydrogen’s potential contribution to the planned shift to a more sustainable future in May 2022, describing it as “the most stupid thing I could possibly imagine for energy storage.”
