Argentinian soccer giants Boca Juniors will compete at the debut 32-team competition — FIFA Club World Cup, which will happen in the USA in 2025.
Boca Juniors is now the 30th team to fit the bill for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the second side from Argentina to book their pass to the US one year from now.
After fellow Argentine teams San Lorenzo and Talleres and Nacional of Uruguay were eliminated from the 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores in the Round of 16 stage, Diego Martinez’s team is now guaranteed a spot at the global tournament via the ranking pathway.
Boca, who are not associated with the ebb and flow continental competition, will compete in the USA the next summer on the back of their CONMEBOL Libertadores appearances in the past three seasons, where they reached the final in 2023 and the Round of 16 in the two earlier campaigns.
Each of the six confederations’ clubs will compete for the title of world champions at the new 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States in June and July 2025.
With six spots open at the competition for South American teams, the winners of the CONMEBOL Libertadores over the last three seasons – Brazilian triplet Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense – have proactively gotten their places.
They will be joined by the winners of this year’s Libertadores in addition to the top two teams in the rankings, who are now guaranteed to beat Boca and their rivals River Plate.
A non-Brazilian or Argentinian team would gain a ranking position if one of Flamengo, Fluminense, or River Plate wins this season.
This is because the ranking pathway will be used to grant access if a club wins two or more editions of the confederation’s premier club competition between 2021 and 2024.
A cap of two clubs for each nation is applied to the entrance list, with an exemption in situations where multiple clubs from a similar nation prevail upon the confederation’s premier club competition the four-year time frame.
