In December 2023, Michael Bolton received a diagnosis of glioblastoma, a common, rapidly growing, and malignant brain tumor. To remove the tumor, he had two surgeries.
For the first time, the renowned composer has spoken about his battle with glioblastoma, a rapidly spreading and violent type of brain cancer.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 72-year-old singer-songwriter, who has won two Grammys during his 50-year career, disclosed that his physicians were able to remove the tumor completely during surgery in December 2023.
However, an infection forced him to have another operation in January 2024. Last October, his radiation and chemotherapy treatments came to a conclusion. To be sure the tumor has not reappeared, he needs to have an MRI every two months. The results of the singer’s most recent MRI were clear.
Bolton spoke about his present health state in the interview with a lot of emotion. He talked about his experience with cancer and his thoughts on his road to recovery.
“You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought. Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of”, he said.
Bolton added that being aware of his support system was helpful to him during his fight with illness. He also thanked his daughters, Taryn, 45, Isa, 49, and Holly, 47, for their unwavering support.

When Bolton announced on Instagram that he will be taking a vacation from touring in January 2024, he first told followers about his ailment. He and his family are currently residing at their house in Connecticut.
The artist acknowledged that cancer has impacted his speech, short-term memory, and movement. But instead of getting a prognosis, he has decided to concentrate on optimism.
Bolton said, because he wants to spend more time with his family, he is not giving up.
“I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side,” he said.
