After a goalless draw with Chile in the third round of Group A, the national team qualified for the Quarterfinals in its first CONMEBOL Copa América appearance.
Only two debutant Concacaf teams had made it past the Group Stage in the competition’s history: Mexico was the first, not only to qualify but also to finish second in the 1993 competition. It was also the first country to have Concacaf guests as participants.
