Chairman Wontumi Faces Charges Over Financial Loss to the State

Bernard Antwi Bosiako

EOCO has accused Chairman Wontumi (Bernard Antwi Boasiako) of causing the state to suffer financial losses. GHS 50 million bail was given to him, with two sureties to be justified.

The allegations are the result of an expanding investigation that started when the CID looked into encroachment into forest reserves, illicit mining (also known as “galamsey”), and water contamination.

He was turned over to EOCO for additional questioning about suspected financial irregularities following his interrogation by the CID.

Andy Appiah Kubi, his attorney, attested to the fact that his client is assisting EOCO officers in meeting the conditions of the bond.

After hours of hard questioning that apparently left him feeling ill, the bail hearing was held at EOCO’s headquarters in Accra.

Chairman Wontumi spent the night in EOCO detention even though bail was granted on May 28–29, 2025, since his team failed to complete the bail requirements prior to curfew.

Significant demonstrations took place during his arrest, with a group of NPP members and party officials, including Titus Glover and Henry Nana Boakye, assembling at EOCO to call for his release.

Consequently, the military was deployed to maintain calm at the premises of EOCO.

The “financial loss to the state” allegation is a serious EOCO charge. Investigations suggest it may involve irregular financial dealings connected to the Ghana Export-Import Bank, alongside the environmental and mining offenses.

He remains under bail, with his legal team working to satisfy surety and payment conditions. The EOCO investigation is ongoing, and further interrogation or court proceedings may follow.

The case continues to draw national attention due to its political implications and the serious nature of the allegations involved.
