Chris Hughton Promises A Strong And Balanced Team Before AFCON 2023

Coach of the Black Stars Of Ghana Chris Hughton says, he is confident that his team will be completely ready for the impending Africa Cup of Countries (AFCON) right on time one year from now in Côte d’Ivoire.

Hughton is very sure he will gather a reasonable team, involving both experienced and youthful players, for the competition which is scheduled to start on January 13, 2024.

The Black Stars of Ghana will face record champions Egypt, alongside Cape Verde and Mozambique, in the group stage.

In anticipation of the AFCON, the Black Stars played a friendly match against Mexico on Saturday, which they lost 2-0. The team lost 4-0 in their second friendly game against the USA on Tuesday night in Tennessee.

Speaking to the press, Hughton stressed the significance of a balanced squad. He stated,

“I am quite sure that we will be ready. But again, I have to speak about team balances”

Hughton further expounded on the challenges of keeping up with team consistency, saying,

“We have six players missing from the regular squad, and that can be the case for the next squad or the one after that. You don’t want to be bringing players in for their first cap or their second cap when you potentially might be missing key players.”

“We have two World Cup qualification games to make sure that we are alright for the Africa Cup of Nations. We will be prepared for sure. We will get the right balance of experienced players and players who have just come into the squad, and we will be ready for what will be a very tough tournament.”

The Black Stars’ first game in Ivory Coast is booked for January 14, where they will face Cape Verde.
