Murat Uzunmehmet, a football agent based in Turkey, tweeted on Saturday morning (February 18) that Christian Atsu had been found dead beneath the rubble two weeks earlier.
Before it was discovered that the soccer star had passed away, the athlete had been trapped for 11 days.
Christian Atsu’s transfer to Hatayaspor is credited to Murat Uzunmehmet, who is said to have had a close relationship with the forward.
Christian Atsu was reportedly among the victims of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6. As a result, both the current president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, and the former president, John Mahama, participated in requests for prayers for his survival.
Atsu’s club confirmed the following day that he had been rescued with only an injured foot. However, Hatayaspor later clarified that the absence of Atsu was a case of identity theft.
People’s faith that Atsu would also be found alive was bolstered by the popularity of rescue-related videos.

Marie-Claire Rupio, Atsu’s wife, made a public plea for additional assistance from the authorities in her search for her husband, who lives in Newcastle with their two children. Rupio confirmed that Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, had arrived in Turkey to help with the search.
Nana Sechere gave a heartbreaking update earlier this week in a series of tweets, revealing that the player’s shoes had been found but that he was still missing.
This was the last update before Saturday’s announcement that Atsu had passed away.
Fans across the globe, particularly Ghanaians have paid tribute to Atsu on social media. He played 65 games between 2012 and 2019, including an outstanding performance that earned him the title of player of the tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Atsu played for a number of European teams, including Bournemouth, Chelsea, FC Porto, Newcastle United, and Everton.
Atsu joined Hatayaspor in September 2022, and on Sunday, February 5, just hours before the disaster that has killed over 45,000 people, he scored his first goal for the club.
