Ghana’s foreign service members have performed admirably, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has praised their efforts as essential to the country’s ambitions for advancement and greatness in the international community.
On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, in Accra, the President was speaking at the opening ceremony of the new Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Annex building. The launch is intended to assist in accommodating the country’s increasing foreign service workforce.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the six-story annex building is a daring declaration of Ghana’s commitment to promoting diplomacy and strengthening the Foreign Service’s capabilities.
The Ministry will have the resources it needs in this building to carry on developing and successfully carrying out Ghana’s foreign policy.
The President stated that the government has taken intentional measures to enhance the Ministry’s capabilities in acknowledgment of the Ministry’s crucial role.
The creation of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in August 2023, a historic organization that offers thorough training to Ghanaian and international diplomats, giving them essential skills in policymaking and negotiation, is noteworthy among these initiatives, he said.
“It is gratifying to note that the Foreign Service Institute now offers French language programmes, empowering diplomats to engage effectively on the global stage, especially within Francophone Africa and beyond,” President Akufo-Addo said.
He also talked about how the Foreign Ministry has played a key role in Ghana’s diplomatic achievements, including securing Ghana’s two-year term on the UN Security Council, leading ECOWAS for two consecutive terms, and supporting the country’s successful bids to host the Secretariats of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Climate Vulnerable Forum here in Accra.
The President praised Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, “who has made history as the first African woman and the first Ghanaian to serve as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations.”
President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the structure would improve the Ministry’s ability to fulfill its mandate and, consequently, help us realize our shared goal of a prosperous and independent Ghana.
