On November 20, the newly built headquarters of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), known as “The Bank Square,” will be put into service in Accra.
The ceremony, which is set to begin at 10 a.m., will feature President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the special guest of honor. It is strictly an invitation-only event.
In July of this year, there was debate about the new headquarters’ construction, particularly in view of the BoG’s reported 2023 loss of 10.5 billion cedis.
The project cost the bank about $250 million, a decision that has drawn criticism from a number of stakeholders in Ghana.
However, because of the advanced stage of development and the presence of contractors on site, stopping the Bank’s construction would have been inefficient and cost more money, according to Mr. Stephen Opata, Special Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
Mr. Opata went on to explain that this project was very far from being stopped. Given the situation, stopping it in the middle would not have been the best course of action.
