Through focused digital inclusion programs, the government is committed to reducing the gender gap in technology, according to Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.
The Minister underlined the importance of government policies and infrastructure investments in equipping women with necessary digital skills during her remarks at the Women in Information, Technology, and Engineering (WITE) Summit at GIMPA.
“Digital inclusion initiatives specifically targeting women are vital to closing the persistent gender gap in technology by addressing barriers like limited technology access, stereotypes and biases in education and workplaces”, Hon. George stated.
He went on to say that these initiatives support social justice and economic progress in the country in addition to advancing gender equality.
The Minister listed the main government initiatives to promote women’s digital inclusion, such as financial digitization initiatives targeted at women-owned enterprises, broadband development, and policy leadership.
He emphasized the government’s dedication to guaranteeing gender parity in digital access and opportunity under the recently unveiled National Digital Economic Policy.
“Infrastructure development remains a priority. We are investing in digital infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to ensure women and girls across the country can benefit from digital technologies. Reliable and affordable internet connectivity for women is non-negotiable”, Hon. George asserted.
The government’s continued attempts to lower data costs, with a particular emphasis on students, were one of the Minister’s major announcements.
