The administration of Donald Trump has taken serious actions that may significantly limit Harvard’s capacity to accept international or foreign students.
Harvard has received a warning from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), led by Secretary Kristi Noem, that failure to meet certain federal requirements might result in the loss of its certification to accept international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Among these demands are:
• Providing detailed records of alleged misconduct by foreign students.
• Shutting down diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
• Reforming international admissions to exclude students deemed “hostile to American values.”
Harvard, however, has adamantly opposed these demands, arguing for the university’s autonomy and citing constitutional issues. The Trump administration has responded by freezing more than $2 billion in government grants, threatening to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status, and warning that it may no longer be able to accept international students.
This impasse is a reflection of larger conflicts over civil rights, free speech, and federal power between the Trump administration and universities.
Harvard has received a lot of support from prestigious universities like Columbia, Stanford, and Princeton as well as from public leaders like former President Barack Obama and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. They denounced the government’s moves as an effort to erode academic autonomy and independence.
Although there is not a complete ban, Harvard’s capacity to accept overseas students is seriously threatened by the Trump administration’s actions, unless the university complies with federal requirements.
