Dr Bernard Okoe Boye Appointed To The Gavi Alliance Board

Ghana’s Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has been appointed to the Gavi Alliance Board as the Alternate Board Member representing the Anglophone Africa constituency.

Dr. Okoe Boye will lead the operation until December 31, 2026.

Following the submission of the nomination in a letter dated September 11, 2024, the confirmation of his appointment follows.

The purpose of the nomination was to take over for the rest of Kwaku Agyeman-Manu’s term.

The Anglophone Africa constituency had until Friday, September 20th, 2024, at 18:00 CET to voice any objections to the nomination.

However, no objections to Dr. Okoe Boye’s nomination were raised in the official letter of appointment, paving the way for the process to continue.

The nomination should be forwarded to the Gavi Alliance Governance Committee for consideration and then approval by the Gavi Alliance Board as the next step. The appointment will take effect right away if it is approved.

Dr Okoe Boye has been very intrinsic in leading health initiatives and reforms aimed at improving Ghana’s healthcare system as Minister of Health.

His appointment is anticipated to strengthen Anglophone Africa’s representation within the Gavi Alliance, a global health partnership dedicated to expanding vaccination access in developing nations.

He was the chief executive officer of the National Health Insurance (NHIA) prior to his appointment as Minister of Health, where he oversaw the expansion of the program to include coverage for a wide range of critical illnesses, including childhood cancer and others.

In addition, he served as the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s board chairman, where he oversaw the implementation of significant reforms that enhanced the hospital’s operational effectiveness and patient care standards.

Dr. Okoe Boye has been at the forefront of Ghana’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic as a public health advocate.

His role significantly increased vaccination rates and contributed to halting the virus’s spread.

His efforts to promote public health education and preventive care have also been widely acknowledged, and a book with the title “Fellow Ghanaians, Telling Ghana’s COVID-19 Story, A journey of fear, facts, faith and fortune

Dr. Okoe Boye’s participation on the Gavi Alliance board will provide valuable insights and perspectives from the Anglophone Africa region, ensuring that the unique health challenges and opportunities within this constituency are adequately addressed.

By increasing the equitable use of vaccines in lower-income countries, the Gavi Alliance board works toward its mission of saving lives and protecting people’s health through its diverse representation.

In Anglophone Africa, the minister’s contribution is also to increase vaccination coverage and health system resilience.

Dr. Okoe Boye has a Bsc. Degree in Human Biology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The Medical and Dental Council has granted him a medical license.
