
During its 2nd Ordinary Session, which was held in Kigali, Rwanda, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the Conference of State Parties (CoSP) of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) approved the appointment of Dr. Delese A. A. Darko, the Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana, as the Agency’s first Director-General.
Her position is significant for pharmaceutical and public health control throughout Africa.
Renowned for her outstanding leadership, Dr. Darko brings to her new position a depth of experience and a stellar record of regulatory performance.
By encouraging access to safe, effective, and high-quality medications and supporting pharmaceutical innovation throughout Africa, her appointment is expected to improve regulatory control.
After a thorough competency-based evaluation, she was chosen as the best applicant out of the original 149.

The legal instrument for the establishment of AMA as the second continental health institution was approved by the African Union’s (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2019.
