ECOWAS And The Ministry Of Health To Support The Growth Of Sustainable Healthcare Systems

A high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), headed by its Director General, paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Health on Monday, April 14, 2025, to continue talks about Ghana’s possible role as the host of a new office for the West African Health Organization (WAHO).

Ghana’s ability to be a key player in furthering WAHO’s strategic vision for regional health integration was emphasized throughout the discussion. One of the main points of emphasis was the plan to open a WAHO office in Ghana.

Both sides recognized the substantial advantages that such an office would provide, such as improved health program coordination, a more robust response to public health emergencies, and more chances for regional technical collaboration.

The delegation was cordially welcomed by Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health, who also conveyed gratitude for WAHO’s continued dedication to promoting cooperation among ECOWAS member nations and bolstering regional health systems.

“We are honoured by WAHO’s interest in Ghana and excited about the prospect of deepening our collaboration. Hosting a WAHO office would not only strengthen our partnership but also reinforce Ghana’s position as a hub for health innovation and coordination in West Africa,” he stated.

The WAHO delegation commended Ghana’s proactive role in regional health initiatives and praised the Ministry’s openness to partnership.

Minister Akandoh stressed on the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with regional and international partners to improve health outcomes and to build resilient, sustainable healthcare systems across the West African subregion.
