Edward Bawa Takes Over As The New CEO Of GNPC

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Edward Abambire Bawa as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), effective January 17, 2025.

Edward Bawa is the immediate past Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region, representing the National Democratic Congress.

Bawa holds a Bachelor of Education in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast and a Master of Business Administration in Business Finance from the University of Liverpool.

Prior to his parliamentary role, Bawa served as the Head of Communication for the World Bank’s oil and gas capacity building project under the Ministry of Petroleum.

His appointment as Acting CEO of GNPC is in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983.

Bawa is a distinguished energy policy expert and communications professional with over two decades of experience in Ghana’s energy sector.

Throughout his career, Bawa has held pivotal roles, including Head of the Communication Unit at the Ministry of Energy and communications consultant for the World Bank’s Oil and Gas Capacity Building Project. His expertise encompasses energy policy analysis, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement.

He has been instrumental in drafting and amending energy-related legislation and has contributed to various parliamentary committees, such as Communications, Mines and Energy, and Poverty Alleviation.

He has also undertaken numerous professional development courses on petroleum revenue management, project development, and risk communication.

His appointment as Acting CEO of GNPC is pending the required advice from the Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

Bawa’s extensive experience and expertise in the energy sector position him well to lead GNPC effectively.

The appointment at GNPC is one of several appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama, who has been choosing personnel for important organizations even before supervisory ministers take office.
