Efforts Are Being Made To Reestablish Ghana’s National Airline

During his current term, President John Dramani Mahama has stated his intention to reestablish Ghana’s national airline. The president made a commitment to support the creation of a new national carrier during his 2024 campaign, highlighting its significance for the advancement of the nation.

Following the ‘death’ of Ghana Airways in 2004, Ghana International Airlines collapsed in 2010, leaving Ghana without a national airline. Memorandums of Understanding with different organizations were signed in earlier attempts to create a new home-based carrier, but these initiatives failed to produce a viable national airline.

To date, President Mahama’s administration has not made public any specific information about the partners and timeline for this initiative. Nonetheless, his government has made the resuscitation of a national airline a priority.

For Tourism Purposes, Ghana Airways Needs To Be Revisited

Due to financial issues, poor management, and growing debt, Ghana Airways was shut down in 2004. After struggling with operational inefficiencies and accruing debts totaling more than $160 million, the 1958-founded airline was forced to liquidate.

An attempt was made in 2005 to replace Ghana Airways with Ghana International Airlines (GIA), but GIA also failed in 2010 because of financial issues.
