Central region of Ghana is by all accounts, developing at a faster rate. My next visit stop was around here, where it is seemingly one of the organised districts in country. My wayfare was a mind blowing one, since I made time to explore the spot, especially the Effutu Constituency/Municipality.
There have been a lot of developmental projects ongoing here, with the Member of Parliament of the area, giving his all to leave a lasting impression. Obviously, you can’t leave out the government of Ghana’s contribution in this broad projects happening here in Effutu.
Many people including residents have commended Hon. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the MP for the constituency who is also the Deputy Majority Leader for his developmental agenda over the most recent couple of years. From facilities to libraries, classroom blocks, markets, beach (which comes with a landing site), and police headquarters, the body electorate continues to change constantly into a cutting edge society.
The constituency had seen in excess of 60 projects starting around 2017 and still counting; in this manner, the greater part of the constituents in are calling for a continued unity of purpose to accelerate the development of the area. With support of the Assembly, Hon. Afenyo-Markin is doing well indeed. As a matter of fact, the congruity between the two offices was vital to achieve results in constituency/municipality.
As a coastal town hosting some of Central region’s most fascinating and grand beach fronts and very much spread out communities, Winneba, the constituency/metropolitan capital, also makes them interesting places for guests. Aside from Effutu, the entire region is genuinely going through huge development to the surprise of quite a large number of people.
When you come to Winneba, it has its name already–being one of the acclaimed towns with several tourism sites including the unique Aboakyer (Deer Hunt) festival, which brings the whole community, Ghanaians and expatriates together annually for its celebration.
The constituency also has very scenic beaches which can be further developed into hospitality facilities to boost its tourism potentials. As at now, some heritage centres which serve as tourism facilities have recently been developed at Winneba. The heritage centres include the Unity Square, the Osimpam Heritage Centre and two fishing monuments at Akosua Village and Eyipey. Thousands of people troop to the centres during festival periods.
Landing Site For Fishermen:
“Before the project, many of our fishermen had left the community to other fishing communities because there was no landing site for their canoes. The project has boosted the economic activities in the area. Now they are closer to home and this has brought stability to most homes too,” one of the fishermen in the area stated.

However, One of the lacks is inadequate drainage system. There is no structured drainage system and the situation has been worsened by the landing site because now the water cannot go into the sea. But officials are working on it.
Access roads are also in pipeline to be constructed. There is approximately 150km road network in the municipality but only 30 per cent is tarred or with surface dressing and five per cent is asphalted. The remaining 65 per cent are gravel-surfaced roads. The Effutu Constituency is also home to a community health nurses training school and a police staff and command college.
By all signs, Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s “rule” is nowhere near completed, making the constituency a fortification for the incumbent NPP. His various developmental projects in the region and backing for some constituents by setting them up has made him a likely winner in the next parliamentary elections.
Residents spoke highly of the MP, saying his works might enable him to retain the seat in the next election. Meanwhile, there are ongoing projects in the region including a market at Yepemso, a community Centre at Osubonpanyin, Alata Kokodo, Woarabeba, New Winneba and Alata Kokodo.
Central Region Population:
The 2021 Population and Housing Census put the constituency’s population at 107,798, comprising 54,723 males and 53,075 females.
