The Electoral Commission has approved the candidature of 13 presidential candidates for Ghana’s December 7 elections after vetting nominations filed by prospective candidates.
39 people picked up passcodes to enable them to fill and file the presidential nomination forms, however only 24 submitted the completed forms as of the close of business on Friday.
The announcement comes after months of political campaigns and qualification checks by the EC to ensure each candidate met the required criteria.
A statement issued by the EC on Friday (20 September) said the candidates were approved after a thorough examination of their nomination forms.
The qualified candidates are Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, Alan Kyerematen of the Ghana Union Movement, Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement, Daniel Lartey Jnr of the Great Consolidated popular Party, George Twum Barima Adu, Independent candidate and Nana Kwame Bediako, Independent Candidate.

The rest are Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party, Hassan Ayariga of the All Peoples Congress, Kofi Apaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana, Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa and Kofi Koranteng, Independent Candidate.
On the other hand, The People’s National Convention’s candidate Bernard Mornah was disqualified.
As the campaign season kicks off in full force, political analysts predict a heated race, especially given the current economic challenges and growing public dissatisfaction with governance.
