Ex Man United Striker Diego Forlán Is Set To Make His Professional Tennis Debut

Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán is set to make his ATP Challenger tennis debut in the doubles competition at the Uruguay Open one month from now (November 2024).

The former Uruguay captain will play alongside Argentinian Federico Coria — who is ranked 101 in the ATP singles.

The event, which is a part of the ATP Challenger Tour, the second-highest level of tennis competition, will take place in Montevideo, the nation’s capital, from November 11 to November 17.

Uruguay Open tournament director Diego López confirmed that Forlán has accepted an invitation to play in the tournament.

Forlán has since been training for quite a while now ahead of the tennis competition.

After playing for Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan, the 45-year-old Forlán retired from football in August 2019.

Diego Forlán is set to make his professional tennis debut after remaining active since retiring.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where Uruguay reached the semifinals, he was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament.

Forlán returned to tennis again in 2023 having played the game as a kid.

Forlán stated,

“My father played football and after retiring at the age of 41 he started playing tennis,” Forlán said. I started [playing tennis] when I was two.

“Then it is known that I dedicated myself to football before dedicating myself to this sport as often as I do now.”
