Information Minister Expresses Satisfaction In Quality Of Arguments In Ghana’s Political Space

Ghana’s Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, has expressed her satisfaction with the development of the country’s political landscape.

She spoke about a shift away from divisive rhetoric and toward policy-driven campaigns in a recent interview with Asaase Radio on August 31.

She expressed satisfaction over the significant shifts in Ghanaian politics that have occurred since she became involved in politics.

“I’m excited about one thing and that is the fact that elections have become about policies, ideas and issues and not insults,” she said.

“We’ve transitioned so much within the short period that I’ve been in active politics, at least from the time that I completed university in 2010 to date.”

Fatima recalled the tense atmosphere of previous political engagements, in which hostility frequently dominated conversation.

“I remember the times we used to go to the studios and you waving, greet your opponent and they won’t respond; they will look the other way. The next minute, slaps are flying around,” she recounted.

She lauded the current emphasis on the quality of political debate arguments and stressed the significance of dialogue over aggression.

“These days, it’s about the quality of your argument. Those who can’t, they will shout, but at least people are verbal and it is always better to resort to dialogue rather than violence,” she added.
