FILLM Elects Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo As Its New President

Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has been elected as the President of the International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures (FILLM).

The announcement was made by Prof. Tom Clark, the active Secretary-General and recently elected VP of the Alliance.

Prof. Clark said in his announcement,

“My heartfelt congratulations and thanks to our new President, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo from the University of Ghana, and to our new Secretary-General, Professor Constantine Yuka from the University of Benin,” to the newly elected executives.

Prof. Clark underscored the meaning of the political race, remembering it as an especially strong portrayal of West African researchers in the Alliance’s administration.

“We may note with pride this is an exceptionally powerful representation of West African scholars among the Federation’s leadership, coming at a time when West African studies in languages, literatures, and cultures have so much to offer the world,” the outgoing Secretary-General said.

FILLM, an organization subsidiary with UNESCO, assumes a crucial role in addressing the scholarly disciplines of language and literature in universities and tertiary higher education institutions globally. Prof. Amfo, an accomplished academic, assumes the presidency for the term spanning January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026.

The newly elected FILLM President, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, brings a wealth of initiative experience to her new role.

Formerly the Pro Vice-Chancellor responsible for Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) from 2019-2021, the founding Dean of the School of Languages from 2014 to 2019 and Head of the Department of Linguistics from 2013 to 2014, all at the University of Ghana, Prof. Amfo served as an Assistant Secretary General of FILLM. She also held the position of President of the Linguistics Association of Ghana from 2010 to 2014.

Apart from Prof. Amfo, Prof. Jemima Asabea Anderson, distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the Department of English and Director of the Pan-African Doctoral Academy at the University of Ghana, has been elected as an Assistant Secretary-General for the same term.

Prof. Adams Bodomo, a Ghanaian and Professor of African Linguistics and Literatures at the University of Vienna, Austria, is the outgoing President of FILLM.
