Finance Minister Challenged By Ama Daaku To Make Sure The Cedi Stays Strong

Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the Communications Team for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made an appearance on Angel FM’s “Angel in the Morning” program on Monday, May 12, 2025.

She commended Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister, for stabilizing the cedi during the program, but she also tasked him with keeping it stable in relation to the US dollar. She also challenged him to make sure the cedi does not become a nine-day wonder and stays strong for a long time.

She urged for transparency in the government’s economic policy and underlined the significance of maintaining the recent advances in the value of the cedi.

Finance Minister Ato Forson reassured Ghanaians that the recent cedi appreciation is a product of careful and prudent economic planning rather than a passing fad in response to worries about the stability of the currency.

“What you are seeing, the appreciation of the cedi will not only continue but will be sustained,” highlighting the government’s commitment to implementing strategic policy decisions to ensure the cedi remains strong.

As of early May 2025, the cedi has gained value against major foreign currencies, with the interbank exchange rate standing at GH¢13.29 to the US dollar, improving from over GH¢16 earlier in the year.

The Ghana Cedi Is Now Performing Well Against The Dollar

The efficacy of the government’s budgetary policies and Ghana’s economic recovery are both viewed favorably by this perspective.

Ellen Ama Daaku’s challenge underscores the opposition’s scrutiny of the government’s economic management and the importance of maintaining currency stability for the country’s financial well-being.
