On February 8, 2025, at the age of 95, Namibian revolutionary and politician Nujoma passed away at a hospital in Windhoek after being admitted for three weeks due to a medical condition.

In response to his passing, the Namibian government declared a time of national mourning. As one of Africa’s liberators, he has been celebrated by a number of leaders.

On X (formerly Twitter), former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo also praised Dr. Sam Nujoma:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and one of the heroes of African liberation”.

“The late First President of Namibia’s life would continue to be celebrated for his heroic leadership of the people of Namibia not only in the fight for independence from colonial rule, but in laying the foundation for a secure, prosperous and democratic nation”.

“I join the many Africans and others around the world in conveying my condolences to President Nangolo Mbumba and the people of Namibia, his widow, children and the leadership of his SWAPO party”, he ended.

From 1990 to 2005, Daniel Nujoma, a revolutionary, anti-apartheid activist, and politician from Namibia, held the office of the country’s first president for three terms. In 1960, Nujoma served as the first president and founding member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). SWAPO was known as the Ovambo People’s Organization (OPO) prior to 1960.

As the leader of the national liberation movement, he was instrumental in promoting Namibia’s political independence from South African domination. After the United Nations revoked its mandate for South Africa to rule the region, he founded the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and began a guerrilla war against the South African apartheid regime in August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe. SWAPO was led by Nujoma during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.
