Four ‘Strong’ Armed Men Arrested At A Galamsey Camp

The Rapid Response team of the Forestry Commission has raided an illegal mining camp known as a galamsey camp in the Subri Forest Reserve near Benso in the Western Region.

The suspects, all Ghanaians, were tracked down mining in a Globally Significant Biodiversity Area of the forest.

During the operation, the group seized five pump action guns, 77 rounds of ammunition, and burnt three excavators.

Other things found at the site have been given over to the Takoradi police for additional investigations.

The suspects, identified as Innussah Yussif, Issah Seidu, Shadrack Yowson, and Emmanuel Adawusu, are believed to be backed by influential figures who supported their illegal mining activities, causing severe destruction to the forest in search of gold.

The raid, which is part of a joint quick response effort in the Takoradi Forest District, comes at a time when more and more people are doing illegal mining, which has destroyed a lot of Ghana’s forest reserves.
