Full Breakdown Of The 2026 National Chairmanship Contest

Akwasi Osei-Adjei, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, John Boadu and Bernard Antwi Boasiako

Ahead of the general election cycle in 2028, the NPP is actively preparing for internal elections for national officers and for its future flagbearer. According to the party’s constitution and processes, representatives from regional, constituency, and other party levels elect national officials, including the National Chairman, during the National Congress.

Although the presidential/flagbearer campaign has received much of the attention in recent reports, the race for national chairmanship is also intensifying.

According to reports, as of early October 2025, the following people have entered or plan to enter the campaign for the position of national chairman of the NPP:

Sammy Crabbe — Former Second Vice Chairman of the NPP. He announced that he will contest the national chairmanship in 2026.

Stephen Asamoah‑Boateng — Former Minister for Chieftaincy & Religious Affairs; has also publicly targeted the chairmanship position.

John Boadu — Former General Secretary of the NPP; listed among those in the national chairmanship field.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) — Ashanti Regional Chairman of NPP; cited as part of the chairmanship race.

Akwasi Osei‑Adjei — Former Foreign Affairs Minister; also listed among possible chairmanship contenders.

Alhaji Abubakar Abdul‑Rahman — From Upper West Region; listed among possible contenders as well.

The following are some of the key factors and dynamics in this national chairman race:

Factional politics, timing and procedure, succession and renewal, and regional/grassroots machinery.

The Best Person For NPP Is Dr. Adutwum– Odike

A fundamental organizational function of the party is played by the National Chairman, who also serves as the head of the National Council, helps direct strategy, organizes the party before general elections, and frequently acts as a crucial link between the party’s grassroots structures and national leadership.

Although five stated bids are mentioned, the whole list of names, along with their corresponding endorsements, support areas, and campaign agendas, has not yet been made public.

Additionally, there is currently a lack of complete information in publicly available sources regarding the precise timetable and regulations for nomination filing, campaigning, and the congress date for the national chairman race.

There is a chance that more candidates will announce or withdraw; the field might grow beyond the five mentioned.

The national chairmanship in particular is now receiving less media attention than the flagbearer/2028 presidential candidate contest in the NPP’s internal elections.
