Full Details Of This Year’s Memphis In May Festival

This year’s Memphis in May festival is expected to be celebrated in fabulous style, as many people are holding back to be a part of this extraordinary event which falls off in the period of May.

Every year, Memphis in May International Festival aims to bring the world to Memphis, Tennessee in the U.S and Memphis to the world. During this event, organizers devote an entire seven day stretch of their month’s customizing to every year’s honoured country during their International Salute. The International Salute is simply the ideal opportunity for everybody to envelop themselves in another country’s culture.

The Memphis in May International Festival Week brings cultural events to community centers, museums, galleries, performing arts centers and schools throughout the city. Luncheons and lectures unite the resources of local government and professional cultural agencies with speakers, artists and celebrities from the honored country, opening doors for international commerce and exchange.

While the cornerstone events like the Beale Street Music Festival and World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest incorporate elements from the honored country’s culture, the International events pay special homage to the country’s past, present, and future.

Ambassadors and Dignitaries from each honored country join in the fun by attending many of the Festival’s events, including a glamorous evening of dinner and dancing at the Memphis in May International Festival Gala.

The Focus Is On Ghana:

The subject of slavery continues to engage the attention of scholars worldwide because the subject is of contemporary relevance and importance and new sources, new ideas, new methods, new approaches and new evidences keep emerging.

That said, Ghana’s role and contribution to trans-Atlantic slavery is recounted differently in diverse spaces between the country and the rest of the world because some local content in these histories have been left out. The lack of contribution of the people’s narrative to this discourse distorts the facts and creates a gap in the slavery resistance stories.

This exhibition seeks to fill some of the gaps by taking another look at the narrative of resistance to slave raiding activities in Ghana from the point of view of the victims and not that of the recorded manuscripts that did not reflect the counter narrative.
