General Motors will include Automatic Emergency Braking, as well as four additional active safety features proven to reduce crashes, as standard equipment on 98% of its 2023 model year vehicles. This encompasses every new EV launching this year, including the family-oriented Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV.
In addition, the company adds four additional active safety features that will come standard on every model in the 2023’s GM lineup, from electric vehicles to cars with internal combustion engines and at all price points.
GM is on track to fulfill a previously agreed-upon industry pledge to make automatic emergency braking standard on 95 percent of all new vehicles sold. This important active safety feature will now be included as standard equipment on more new vehicles than ever before as a result of automakers’ advocacy and cooperation.

The majority of GM’s vehicles for the 2023 model year will now include these four additional active safety features as standard: Auto high-beam control IntelliBeam, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.
“GM has gone well beyond the safety commitment we made to our customers for the 2023 model year, with a handful of additional standard safety features shown to bring real-world results,” said John Capp, director, Vehicle Safety Technology, Strategy and Regulations.
“As we look ahead toward a future vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, these technologies are significant building blocks with proven benefits for reducing common crashes.”
GM is committed to making use of safety research data to design option packages that expand access to the most advantageous features. A 2023 University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) study looking at these GM security features demonstrated Programmed Crisis Slowing down, along with Forward Impact Ready, decreased backside striking accidents by 42%.
Front Pedestrian Braking reduced front pedestrian crashes by 23% and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning reduced roadway departure crashes by 15%. In addition, a 2022 UMTRI study indicated IntelliBeam reduced nighttime crashes with animals, pedestrians and bicyclists by 22%.
The Cadillac LYRIQ, and the all-new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, provide these five standard active safety features and also usher in a new generation of front sensors with an expanded field of vision and added benefits.
This new sensor suite has the potential to smoothen Lane Keep Assist engagement, add Bicyclist Automatic Emergency Braking to Front Pedestrian Braking, and add Blind Zone Steering Assist, which provides a brief, firm turn of the steering wheel to help prevent lane change collisions, among other benefits. In subsequent model years, these same improvements will be applied to additional future products.
The company’s commitment to standard active safety features is also reflected in the most recent affordable internal combustion engine products.
Automatic emergency braking, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam headlights will come standard on models starting at just $21,495.
Along with the 2024 Chevrolet, the Trax gives customers more options for new cars that are well under $30,000 in price. Customers at all price points and trim levels will benefit from this set of proven safety technologies with this commitment.
