Ghana Elects A New Speaker Of Parliament

Newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Alban Gbagbin

Subsequent to serving at the Parliament of Ghana for 28 years, former MP for Nadowli Kaleo, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been chosen Speaker of the eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The 63 year old won after a firmly challenged mystery polling form in the Chamber of Parliament on Thursday January 7 against former Speaker, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye.

As one of the oldest MPs in Parliament, Bagbin polled 138 votes against his archetypes 136 with one official failing to cast a ballot. He accordingly leaves a mark on the world for being the first Speaker of Parliament who isn’t elected by the ruling party.

Mr Bagbin was sworn in by the Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin-Yeboah. After an uncovered barehand boxing between individuals from the two significant political parties, Gbagbin was at last proclaimed the winner.
