Ghana Has Made Remarkable Strides In Cybersecurity

At the recent 2024 Cybersecurity Awards Night, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ghana’s Communications Minister, commended the country’s advancements in cybersecurity.

She thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his support and dedication, recognizing his pivotal role in allowing the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) to carry out its mandate.

Ghana’s cybersecurity achievements, such as the creation of the National Cybersecurity Secretariat in 2017, its transition to the National Cyber Security Center in 2018, and its conversion to the CSA in 2021, were highlighted by Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful (MP).

The International Telecommunications Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index and the Cybersecurity Maturity Model have also acknowledged Ghana as a significant player in global cybersecurity as a result of these efforts.

The Minister focused on the following when outlining the updated National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy:

• Strategic Investments: Enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure

• Early Warning System: Prompt incident response

• Critical Information Infrastructure Protection: Safeguarding vital digital assets

• Cybersecurity Research: Fostering innovation and development

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also acknowledged the contributions of people and organizations throughout the ecosystem and underlined the significance of shared responsibility in cybersecurity.

She concluded by praising both domestic and foreign partners, such as the United States’ Security Governance Initiative, ECOWAS, UNICEF, and the African Union Commission.

The launch of Ghana’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2024 with the theme: “Combating Misinformation/Disinformation in a Digital Resilient Democracy – Our Collective Responsibility” highlights this progress, which is especially noteworthy given the growing threat of disinformation.
