President John Dramani Mahama, has stated his strong commitment to solving the country’s plastic waste issue, implying that plastic products, sometimes known as “rubbers,” may eventually become outdated in Ghana.
President Mahama issued a warning that the government would consider outright banning plastic products if plastic manufacturers failed to put in place efficient waste management plans. He said that Ghana is taking inspiration from Rwanda’s successful plastic ban.
“Plastics have become such a pollutant in our environment that if the producers don’t do something about it, then we might have to go the Rwanda way… If we can’t handle and manage plastic waste, then we must ban it.”
This position is a component of a larger effort to enhance waste management and encourage environmental sustainability in Ghana.
In order to reduce the negative effects of plastic waste on the environment, the government has urged plastic makers to explore environmentally suitable substitutes, such as biodegradable materials.
Even if there is not a total ban on plastics, President Mahama’s remarks emphasized how urgent it is to address plastic pollution and the government’s readiness to move swiftly if needed.
