The match between Ghana and Cape Verde played on Sunday January 14, saw Ghana trail by 2-1.
Garry Rodrigues scored a sensational stoppage-time winner as Cape Verde beat four-time champions Ghana in Group B in their first round of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.
Cape Verde took the lead in the 17th minute when Rodrigues’ shot was parried by Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori, succumbing to Jamiro Monteiro to hide from close range.
Black Star’s midfielder, Majeed Ashimeru leveled for Ghana but was disallowed after VAR checks by referee Jean Jacques Ndola Ngambo.
Ghana leveled 11 minutes into the second half with Alexander Djiku heading home from Jordan Ayew’s corner, going as far as get his head to it as Cape Verde failed to clear a harmless delivery.
After a mix-up in Ghana’s defense, Cape Verde’s Rodrigues tapped into an empty net in the 92nd minute, ensuring there would be late drama with just six minutes remaining.
With three points, Cape Verde is at the top of Group D.
Ghana will play Egypt next Thursday, 18 January at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.
