Ghana Shows Strong Recovery In International Tourism

Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer has revealed that, Ghana’s Tourism space is open for more developmental collaboration and tourist patronage.

The Minister stated that Ghana is determined to continue supporting UN Tourism’s efforts at the 121st Executive Council meeting of the United Nations Tourism Council, which took place on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain.

Egyapa Mercer said the most recent data shows serious areas of strength in international tourism, with Africa outperforming pre-pandemic appearances. According to him, Ghana’s tourism has also shown flexibility with a 25 percent increment in appearances in 2023 compared with the earlier year, and a 2 percent ascend in pre-pandemic.

On sustainable practices, Hon. Mercer shared Ghana’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices that benefit local communities and preserve the environment. Initiatives such as eco-tourism, cultural and heritage tourism and community-based tourism are being implemented to attract responsible tourists.

He was also quick to say that the successful “Beyond the Return” initiative, which is a follow-up to the “Year of Return,” aims to keep people of African descent talking to each other and to encourage diaspora investments and economic ties.

The Minister claims that the ‘ExperienceGhana‘, ‘ShareGhana‘ campaign is also being used to promote domestic tourism in order to speed up tourism and increase visits from domestic tourists.

He continued,

“The Accra Marine Drive Project, a 241-acre redevelopment scheme of Accra’s waterfront, is currently ongoing and will establish an iconic skyline for Accra and transform that part of Accra into a world-class tourism enclave”

Ghana has taken steps to reorganize the visa system, including a plan to implement an e-visa system that will make traveling to Ghana easier for tourists and help the country grow its tourism industry. These initiatives demonstrate a dedication to making Ghana more accessible and establishing it as a desirable destination for visitors from all over the world.

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to eco-friendly tourism that is good for the country’s people, culture, and environment. He took advantage of the occasion to invite the gathering to Ghana to experience her welcoming hospitality, rich culture, and picturesque landscape.
